RIAWS – Rural Intersection Active Warning System
(Waka Kotahi now incorporate RIAWS under Intersection Speed Zones (ISZ))
Originally designed to manage crash risk and slow traffic on through roads at major intersections, RIAWS is designed to detect vehicles on the side road and those turning across traffic sending real time data to the central control system to trigger VMSS to display a lower speed limit for through traffic.
Armitage were directly involved in the original design and development of RIAWS including a Waka Kotahi approved safety trial which utilised active safety enhancement systems and ultimately culminated in an extensive design and engineering process building the foundation for all subsequent RIAWS specifications and projects. For this the project team including NZ Transport Agency, Mackie Research and Armitage won the 2014 3M Traffic Safety Innovation Award. RIAWS has proven to be a valuable and cost-effective tool for Waka Kotahi in reducing both the number and severity of state highway intersection vehicle crashes.
From the initial trial Armitage have delivered 26 separate sites nationwide from Southland to Northland incorporating both local site requirements and legislative changes all centrally monitored allowing system telemetry, fault, damage and road status changes to be remotely monitored and system parameters altered where required.
